First World, 2009
CROSS MEDIA

In First World, I journey to far north‐east Arnhem Land to research the comings and goings of non‐Indigenous outsiders and their work to improve the lives of Indigenous people. My observations reveal confronting and inevitable truths about my own involvement and those of my family and friends.

I piece together five years of my experiences in Baniyala from hours and hours of observational material of the community. myself and other intruders. Videos, photographs and dictaphone recordings are threaded together and ‘painted over’ in what is a ‘moving painting’.

Viewers wander in and out of the set-up, becoming outsiders themselves and looking through my eyes through to their own involvement.

Constellation & Education Corner, 2008
Cross media + CURATION

Vanessa curated a community art installation in Sydney's CarriageWorks foyer and contributed two works for the exhbition.

CONSTELLATION
Sound, objects and light
Violin, Cello, French Horn, Electric Guitar, Vibes.

The clothes line is an experiment embodying our perceptions of the universe with sound and light. Senses of space, depth, reflections and refractions are the concepts at the heart of the work. By using basic household objects, certain things can be seen and heard from certain places, and echoed in others - a walk-through that is different for every user.

Created with Joseph Littlefield. Performed by: Freya Franven, Adam Jeffrey, Ezmi Pepper, Kartini Suharto-Martin & Joseph Littlefield.

EDUCATION CORNER
Objects & Video

The corner is a literal embodiment of all the beautiful and incongruent bits and pieces the Persephone’s Wolf project was built on: stories, characters, themes and a shamelessly juvenile attitude. Audiences rifle through books and videos.

Video content made possible thanks to Creative Commons and the Internet Archive.

Modern Odysseus, 2009
CURATION

A creative re-imagining of the photographic novel Modern Odysseus released by FilmInk in 2008, by Julian Shaw collaborating with actor Colin Friels.

In this gallery installation, Julian Shaw interrogates the underlying themes and stories of his book, using raw materials from its original construction. Shaw looks to his own experiences in creating both the book and exhibition, in what has become a long-term labour of love spanning several years of his life.

EXHIBITED

Childsplay, 2006
VIDEO

Childsplay is a part fiction, part-documentary short film.
